This is the third time that Minna!, a manga by Sion Sono, has been turned into a movie. Power from beyond! By Kiminori Wakasugi. The first live-action TV show based on the manga came out in April 2013 as a 12-episode series. On April 3, 2015, a live-action spin-off TV show called All Esper Dayo! SP was shown in Japan. This adaptation for the stage was called Eiga Minna! Power from beyond! The cast is different from earlier TV versions, with Alyssa Ikeda playing Miyuki Hirano instead of Xia Fan.
On September 4, 2015, the movie came out in Japan, just a few months after Sion Sono’s All Esper Dayo! SP, which was based on the manga. It was also shown at a number of international film festivals, such as the Busan International Film Festival on October 2, 2015, the Sitges Film Festival on October 11, 2015, and the Buenos Aires Film Festival in 2015. The Italian Future Film Festival will be held on April 9, 2016, the Edinburgh International Film Festival will be held on June 20, 2016, and the Eejanaika Toyohashi Film Festival will be held on March 5, 2017.
Most critics thought the movie was full of sexual hints and talk, but there was no actual nakedness or $*x. Variety.com’s Justin Chang called the movie “occasionally likeable, but often downright annoying.” He said it was “kind of like having a dog kick your leg for almost two hours; it’s dirty and drab and pretty much endless, but after a while you’re completely blown away and you have to admit it’s kind of cute.” Wendy Ide of Screen Daily said, “For all of his cosplay $#x slaves, piles of blow-up dolls, and wild masturbation, this one is as calm and innocent as a Benny Hill sketch.”
