Walkerfield, a junior from Madison, Mississippi, was killed, and Blanche Williamson, a sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, was seriously hurt when a car hit her outside the plaza and then drove away. This is sad and upsetting news for the people on our campus, and with so many unanswered questions about what happened, feelings are understandably high.
Please join me in sending Walker’s family, friends, classmates, and other people close to him my deepest condolences. Walker is an important part of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and a well-liked person on our campus.
Even though there are no words that can make his friends and family feel better, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this very sad time. Also, please pray that Blanche keeps getting better and gets well. She needs help, love, and care from us.
I’d like to thank Oxford Police for how quickly they helped. They are working with other law enforcement agencies to investigate the case thoroughly, and two suspects who have nothing to do with our school have already been taken into custody. Our community can help investigators by not making assumptions about what happened or why and by sharing relevant information when it’s available.
We are a close-knit and friendly campus and community, which is why this story hit us so hard. I encourage anyone who needs help to talk to their friends or to use one of the following University services.
