The first building for Santa Cruz High School was built in 1895, and it opened for the first time in 1897. Before, all high school classes were taught on the fourth floor of Guanlan Middle School. On June 7, 1878, Evelyn Pope, Cornelia Chappelmann, John Cooper, and Underwood McCann, who were all in the first class at Smith Opera House, got their diplomas. By a vote of 530 to 175, it was decided in 1894 that a separate building was needed, and it was built in 1895.
